Using the Right Tools for Every Problem

A Father's Legacy: Using the Right Tools for Every Problem
Happy Father's Day!
Every day I am reminded of my dad in some way.
He gave me so many gifts — from musicianship to his approach to solving problems.
True story…
My wife and I went on several jazz cruises.
The first time, I decided to compete in the talent show.
They read my brief bio which included: "he loves to play music, travel and solve problems."
One judge was like, “wow he’s thinking about solving problems while on vacation?”
Here's the thing...
Dad's example made me realize something we all face: what do you do when you don't have the right tool for the job?
My dad was beyond handy and the community leaned on him when they needed an expert.
He had exactly what he needed: wrenches, hammers, power tools and more.
When something broke, we never had to scramble — the solution was right there in his toolboxes.
This taught me something important.
Without the right tools or skills, everything becomes harder.
Problems feel impossible to solve.
You're then incapable of helping yourself and others.
Sounds like frustration to me.
The truth is...
Dad's real gift wasn't having tools — it was using them to help people.
I'll never forget watching him help a kid whose bicycle frame snapped.
The boy was pushing it down the street when Dad noticed him.
Without hesitation, Dad asked the kid about the bike.
He invited the kid over, pulled out his welder, and fixed the bike.
The kid thanked him and rode off with a huge smile.
Ever tell someone, “I can show you better than I can tell you?”
Well, watching Dad that day, I learned a valuable life lesson.
Being great isn't about what you know — it's about using what you know to help others.
