Beyond the Diploma

Don't just graduate, innovate!

Beyond the Diploma: Don't just graduate, innovate!

It's good to have people in your circle who are always looking to level up.

Recently, a friend, Dr. Michael De Jesus, shared a 90-second clip to promote his education brand.

The title was "If Your Degree Doesn't Lead Somewhere, Was It Worth It?"

He backed up his positive claims with statistics, including wealth gaps.

But he also stressed why the educational system needed reform.

Here's the thing...

I'm preparing to attend my Godson's high school graduation.

At the same time, I read an article titled "College Graduates This Year Are Not Finding Jobs. AI Is Partly to Blame..."

Graduation season is upon us, and it's a time of celebration and great anticipation.

One would hope?

The article states that students were struggling in the job application process.

Job applicants are using AI tools to apply for jobs, and at the same time, AI systems screen applicants.

It becomes a numbers game without any real human interaction.

When I graduated college some 24 years ago, the job market was scarce.

Let's say, I got really good at writing creative resumes and cover letter headlines.

I was manually doing ATS keywords before it was a writing tool.

A year ago, I recall my Godson asking me about engineering.

"Uncle Rudy, I want to do engineering like you, but I want to do chemical engineering."

That warmed my heart, and at the same time, I felt the struggle all over again.

I gave him the typical advice about college success.

And then I gave him a challenge, and his eyes lit up.

I said, "When you go to college, make it a goal to walk away with a business or product before you graduate."

In college, you have nothing but time, other brilliant minds, and free resources.

Think about companies that started from a dorm room.

Here’s a few: Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Dell, Yahoo.

Before I started my engineering career, I read "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki.

I approached each job as an opportunity to learn, not just a paycheck.

These companies were not an overnight success.

Why not learn from what already works?

After any challenge most would wonder, WHY?

And I didn't leave my nephew in suspense.

Here's the beauty of it all.

If you leave college with a business or product, you're not looking for a job when you graduate.

And you can hire or partner with your proven friends.

Cheers!

PROMPT: A surreal fantasy landscape featuring a giant moss-covered stone hand emerging from a cliff, cradling a cozy, flower-covered cottage with a smoking chimney. Two elderly people sit outside playing chess near a blooming pink cherry blossom tree. A swing hangs from the stone fingers, with an elderly man swinging over a vast canyon. Two golden retrievers stand nearby. A majestic waterfall flows from the edge of the hand into a misty valley below. The scene is set above the clouds at sunrise, with soft golden light bathing the mountains and sky. Dreamlike, peaceful, and richly detailed.
