From Panama With Love:How the Right Rooms Change Everything
I'm writing to you this week from Panama City, Panama.
Not Panama City, Florida.
People mix those up all the time.
So, for the last four or five years, Angela and I have been sampling different countries.
We're trying to understand what it would look like to live abroad.
Could we see ourselves living there?
What's involved in qualifying for residency?
What happens when the vacation part wears off?
This trip to Panama was just that.
It was also a birthday trip.
Happy Birthday, Angela!
While we were here, our YouTube friend Aisha invited us to an expat networking event.
Best decision we made.
We met people who'd been living in Panama for years.
Some had been here two years. Others, four or more.
They told us how they got residency.
They talked about the transition.
They told us what leaving the U.S. looks like once you do it.
No YouTube research.
No Google rabbit hole.
People sitting across the table who had done it.
Then yesterday, we celebrated Angela's birthday over brunch with Aisha.
And the cool part? She's an engineer too.
She had a unique perspective.
Her mother is from Panama, and she shared how that connection eventually brought her here.
We had a mental list of questions, and somehow the answers kept coming.
That's when something clicked.
When you put yourself in the right rooms, answers have a funny way of showing up.
Not because the information wasn't available before.
We weren't in a position to receive it.
There's an old saying:
"When the student is ready, the master will appear."
I understand that a little differently now.
Sometimes the "master" isn't one person.
It's a conversation.
An introduction.
A networking event you almost didn't attend.
It might be someone you meet over brunch.
Someone who knows exactly what you've been trying to figure out.
And Panama itself?
Beautiful.
We're here during rainy season.
And yes, it's humid.
But the people have been warm and welcoming.
Our Spanish isn't great.
Not even close.
Technology helped us get past some of the language barrier.
But people met us where we were.
Patient. Helpful. Kind.
We explored several parts of Panama City.
Some areas are modern high-rises.
Others are older and more rustic.
But something stood out wherever we went.
People took pride in how they presented themselves.
There was an energy here that Angela and I both noticed.
So I've been thinking about one question this week:
Am I putting myself in rooms where the masters can show up?
Maybe that's a question worth asking yourself too.
The information you need might already be out there.
Sometimes you have to put yourself in a position to receive it.
Sometimes you have to get in the room.
