Isn't it interesting when an opportunity comes your way when you’re not looking?
And what's more shocking, the objectives seem as if they're written just for you.
This has happened to me several times.
But — this last time has topped them all.
And the story goes like this…
Oh look! another LinkedIn direct message (sarcasm).
"Hi Rudy, I came across your profile and was wondering if you were looking for a new opportunity?"
It was a job recruiter, sharing details about the "Advanced Manufacturing & Process Automation Engineer" role.
I looked over the details and soon realized that I checked all of the boxes.
We exchanged a few more messages…
Then she emailed me more details including compensation.
Guess what grabbed my attention the most?
At the very end of the email it read — "requires 1x days a week in the office".
Working remote? No daily commute? Time freedom?
Now I’m intrigued and wanted to know more…
Then we played “phone tag” a few times. You know how it goes.
We finally talked on the phone and she mentioned that this role has been open for 2 months — She was having a hard time finding the right talent.
Prior to our call, she sent my resume to the client — who replied, "this is what we’re looking for".
She said, "you're a Unicorn"!
I smiled and thanked her.
We then discussed scheduling and next steps.
After the call, I pondered on this whole notion of being a Unicorn in my industry.
After some deep thought, I came up with: “3 Secrets to Becoming a Unicorn in Your Industry”.
1. Learn everything you can about your field and beyond. Let curiosity lead you.
2. Seek out challenges and opportunities that help you grow and improve. Take on tough assignments.
3. Showcase your skills and experience in a way that demonstrates your uniqueness and value. Learn how to market yourself which opens the doors for more opportunities to develop. Repeat Steps 1-3.
