Hugging a Tree?

Why Practice Alone Isn't Enough

“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.”

― Chinese Proverb

Hugging a Tree? Why Practice Alone Isn't Enough

They say practice makes perfect, but that's only half the story.

I remember like it was yesterday.

I won the role of drum major for my junior year of high school.

It was tradition for the junior and senior drum major to attend
a camp for drum majors.

We learned how to conduct music, march and lead a band.

After all these years I still recall them referring to the conducting posture as "hugging a tree".

Here's the thing...

The instructor also said, "Practice does not make Perfect. It makes Permanent."

Meaning, if you practice the wrong way or the right way it becomes permanent.

Let that sink in.

Whether it's music, engineering or business concepts, I become a student of the game.

I live and breathe ‘it’ ― until ‘it’ becomes permanent.

Remember this simple acronym: LAR

Learn: Devour Knowledge

Immerse yourself in the fundamentals with books, videos and workshops.

Apply: Put Theory into Practice

Put your newfound knowledge into practice. Don't wait for perfection before you start. Being uncomfortable and making mistakes is part of the journey. The key is to take consistent action.

Refine: Learn From Every Experience

As you practice, analyze your performance. Reflect on what worked well and what needs improvement. Seek feedback from mentors, peers, or even online communities. Use this information to refine your technique and approach.

In Closing:

Becoming a student of the game is a lifelong commitment.

There's always something new to learn.

If you struggle with that, seek inspiration from advanced individuals in your field.

Watch, analyze and learn from them.

Lastly, have patience!
