Paying It Forward: Empowering Young Entrepreneurs to Thrive
I've always believed that the best way to support the next generation is to share what we've learned.
This weekend we visited family in Virginia.
I had the privilege to hear a few aspiration stories from some younger family members.
One member studied information technology and is also coaching basketball.
As he shared his story my gears started turning.
I asked him if he had ever thought about motivational speaking?
He was like you're the second person who asked me this.
I said well as a coach, you already have the respect of your team.
You can leverage your experience and situations to inspire others.
I could sense some hesitation.
He said well I kind of don't like to be out front.
I understand what you're saying.
You don't want the attention all on you, you want to be humble ― right?
He said yeah that's it.
I used to be the same way.
Buy I said it boils down to building your personal brand.
You may be the best at what you do, but people need to know who you are.
I gave him a few more examples of why building a personal brand is great marketing.
But I could still sense some reluctance.
I said, if you're really concerned about being in the spotlight, try this...
Put your focus on your team and players.
Highlight their successes and challenges.
Use storytelling to inspire others and you will be successful.
He smiled in agreement.
Often times when we mentor others, we get tunnel vision on one path.
But I've learned to give a person different paths to better connect with them.
The younger generation can achieve more by learning from our wisdom.
