" When you have mountains to climb, you can complain about the walk — or appreciate the view."
The Detour Is the Destination : Lessons From a Graduation and a Survivor
Feels like a month.
But yesterday gave me something I didn't expect.
We attended my nephew Melvin's high school graduation.
Big moment. Great energy. Very efficient ceremony.
Here's the cool part.
The principal of his school? He graduated high school with my wife Angela. Same class. Now he's leading Christiansburg High School.
Full circle.
During his speech he mentioned that when you face a mountain, don't complain about the climb. Look forward to the view.
I had to write that down.
Then he said something else that captured my attention.
Detours are the best builders of success.
Not shortcuts. Detours.
Think about it...
When life throws you off the planned path — that's when you learn the most. About yourself. About how to manage, respond, and keep moving.
The ceremony was held at Virginia Tech's Cassell Coliseum.
The same venue I graduated in 25 years ago.
Same setup. Same energy. Different season.
Sitting there watching these young graduates — I couldn't help but pause.
I thought about everything they're about to face.
Then I thought about everything I've already faced.
The blessings. The battles. The journey.
And how far I've come.
Afterwards we went to Melvin's graduation party.
I sat down with Angela's uncle David.
He shared his story.
Stage four cancer.
Seven years of chemo.
He beat it.
Cancer free.
I sat there almost speechless.
Not just inspired — convicted.
Here's a man who woke up every day with every reason to quit.
And he didn't.
He figured out a plan. He decided to live — not just survive.
And now people are reaching out to him. Wanting to be in his presence. Wanting to draw from his strength.
That story deserves to be heard.
So I'm going to help Uncle David get his story out. Whether that's a YouTube channel, social media, a book — whatever it becomes.
Because you never know who's fighting the same battle in silence.
Waiting for proof that it's possible.
He is living proof.
So here's what I want to leave you with this week.
You're going to face mountains.
You're going to hit detours.
Both are part of the journey.
Don't complain about the walk.
Appreciate the view.
And whatever you do — don't quit.
