“ Shock the world.”

― English Gardner

They Said No : She Shocked the World

Hope you had a safe 4th of July weekend.

And if you caught any World Cup action, I've been learning a lot more about soccer.

But this week I stumbled on a podcast that made me lean in.

Olympic track star English Gardner's dream school looked her in the eye.

Told her she was talented.

But not talented enough for a full scholarship.

Her parents were clear.

No full ride, no college.

She swallowed her tears.

Looked at her parents.

And said, “let's go” and never looked back.

Then she went and ran the fastest time in the world indoors.

That same coach called her that night.

"Look at you Gardner. Our talk must have did a little something."

She stayed quiet on the phone.

Then worked up the nerve.

"Coach. I already committed to Oregon."

Here's the thing...

She had never even spoken to the Oregon coach.

Not once.

But she knew she needed someone who believed in her.

Someone who would pull out her potential.

She called the Oregon coach and told him she was going to attend Oregon.

The Oregon coach hopped on a red eye that night.

Flew out to watch her practice.

Said this:

"I know you're hurt. I know we're a distance school. But if I take a chance on you, I want you to take a chance on me."

She took the bet.

The rest is history.

That story hit close to home.

I think about the mentors who spoke into my life.

When engineering courses got tough, one mentor looked at me and said:

"If you're good enough to get in, you're good enough to stay."

My dad put it another way.

“You're swimming across the river. You're almost there. You can’t turn back now. Finish the race.”

Early in my career a mentor said:

"I know you'll go far in engineering because you don't mind learning and working hard."

To be honest, I didn't understand the magnitude of these words while in the moment.

Fact is, they still carry me decades later.

Get this...

Like English Gardner, there came a time when I had to take a bet on myself.

Diving into business. Into entrepreneurship. Into building things nobody around me fully understood yet.

Sometimes you have to leap before you are 100% ready.

So I want you to reflect this week.

Think about the mentors who spoke into your life.

The moments someone believed in you before you believed in yourself.

And ask yourself this:

Am I taking the bet?

Cheers!

―――

I don't know exactly where you are on your journey, but I show up every week with words of encouragement, lessons learned, and ideas to help you grow.

To those of you who reach out to let me know these stories resonate — thank you.
It means more than you know.

My goal was simple. Be consistent. Write more. Document the journey.

Hey! Expect a book one day. 😊

If you find value here, share it with a friend. Deal?

PROMPT: Sweeping panorama of a city built into a vast hyperbolic canyon, its curved obsidian and sandstone walls carved into layered contemporary dwellings stacked atop ancient-style terraces. Sapphire-blue mirrored spires rise from the canyon floor, their surfaces etched with pulsing neon-pink circuitry. Traditional stone bridges, reimagined in modern composite materials, arch between cliffside districts covered in cascading greenery and vertical farms. Waterfalls tumble from irrigation channels built into the rock, feeding a central river lined with ivory-white plazas. Airships drift along the canyon's curvature, catching the last light of sunset. July 2026 AI Roundup: Robots, Robotics, and Compute

This video provides a concise breakdown of how major market assumptions about AI—such as the necessity of model ownership and the impact on workforce headcounts—are evolving as of early July 2026.

  • Claude Fable 5 Returns: After a brief US government suspension due to export-control directives, Fable 5 was re-released on July 1 with tighter safety classifiers and new behavioral constraints. It remains a top-tier model for high-stakes reasoning and complex coding tasks.

  • SpaceX & AI IPO Wave: The AI sector is entering public markets, marked by SpaceX's record-breaking $75 billion IPO. Meanwhile, both OpenAI and Anthropic have filed for their own IPOs, shifting the industry toward heightened investor and regulatory scrutiny.

  • OpenAI GPT-5.6 Preview: OpenAI began a limited rollout of its 5.6 generation (Sol, Terra, and Luna). While initially gated to trusted partners, these models—particularly the Sol Ultra—are setting new performance benchmarks in coding and reasoning, with broader access expected mid-July.

  • Infrastructure as a Strategic Asset: Meta and other tech giants are pivoting toward monetizing excess compute power, signaling a shift where infrastructure capability is becoming as valuable as the models themselves. Additionally, SK Telecom announced a massive 15GW AI data center project to position itself as an Asian hub.

  • Claude Sonnet 5 Defaulting: Anthropic launched Sonnet 5 as the new consumer default for its platforms. It has become the standard for most production workloads due to its efficiency and strong performance on benchmarks like Terminal-Bench 2.1.
