From Frustration to Innovation: My Chrome Extension Development Journey

Have you ever worked on a project and felt like you couldn't catch a break?

It seemed as if there was no shortage of barriers and setbacks?

Well join the club.

The good news is, we can turn our problems and frustrations into opportunities.

Last week, I wrote about "The Ship Fast Culture” and whether it’s the best approach for

achieving reliability and sustainability.

But this week I set out with a plan to learn and implement the React framework.

React is a JavaScript library that simplifies building user interfaces.

Too geeky? Bear with me…

I was making great progress and at every milestone, I pulled my wife aside to share.

And then it happened again!

What was supposed to be ‘plug and play’ addon resulted in countless errors.

One of the tools, Firebase, contained addon extensions that would simplify Stripe payments integration.

Let's say I spent hours, in fact, days dealing with permission and security errors.

I'll admit it was frustrating and overwhelming.

I started questioning my own technical ability.

There was one thing that kept me in the game.

I recall reading several blog posts where other individuals experienced the same issues.

Knowing that, I felt a little better about my situation.

And the one thing that kept me going was stepping back and breaking down my code into smaller tasks.

It's nothing wrong with looking at the bigger picture but sometimes that can be overwhelming.

Would you agree?

Despite these challenges, I persevered.

I began to notice that my understanding increased after each small win.

But I still had the issues with Firebase looming over me.

I decided to switch courses and go a different route.

Here’s the thing…

I documented every step along the way and created a template for Chrome extension development.

Wouldn't there be others who could benefit from this?

I’m glad you asked!

In the end, what seemed like a setback turned out to be a setup for another opportunity.

I plan to sell my system as a boilerplate template for others to implement.

Of course this will be after my app is in full production. (wink)

Cheers!
